The Olympic Coaches The Kàroly's

Béla and Márta Károlyi

The coaching couple Béla Károlyi and Márta Károlyi have played significant roles in the development and success of the United States women's gymnastics team. However, it's important to note that by the time of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, both Béla and Márta Károlyi had retired from coaching. Their coaching careers were prominent in the earlier years, and they were particularly influential during the 1990s.

Béla Károlyi is a Hungarian-American gymnastics coach who gained international recognition for his coaching success. He coached several gymnasts, including Olympic champions such as Nadia Comăneci and Mary Lou Retton. Béla was known for his intense training methods and for pushing his gymnasts to achieve perfection.

Márta Károlyi, also of Hungarian descent, is a gymnastics coach who, along with her husband Béla, continued the tradition of coaching excellence. Márta became the National Team Coordinator for USA Gymnastics in 2001. In this role, she played a crucial part in developing the talent and coordinating the training of the U.S. women's gymnastics team and coordination of activities leading up to major competitions, including the Olympics. Márta continued to serve as the National Team Coordinator until her retirement in 2016. During this period, the U.S. women's gymnastics team experienced unprecedented success, winning numerous Olympic and World Championship medals.

While the Károlyis were not directly coaching the athletes during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, their legacy and influence persisted through the gymnasts they had trained and the impact they had on the sport in the United States. The coaching responsibilities for the national team had transitioned to others, including individual coaches for the gymnasts. The coaching staff for the national team can vary from year to year based on coaching assignments and retirements.
